Having discovered a great, free, on-line language translator I thought :idea
I could upload my Ciao UK reviews over to Ciao France.

Except that when I tried to join Ciao France, I got stuck on the menu where you select the country where you live. Because you have to give your address details, obviously, I need to select Uk or Great Britain from the drop down menu except I cannot find the words UK or Great Britain (or should I say La Grande-Bretagne) at all!

Am I being fick?

The United Kingdom in french is 'Royaume-Uni'. It is on the list of countries as well.

Are you sure the online translator is accurate enough to actually get everything right? I myself wouldn't trust those things to get anything right no matter how good they purported to be (unless you really know French that is).

I don't know if you speak much french or not, but if you don't then using an online translator simply isn't worth it. After all we have seen those reviews on Ciao UK so often.....not good..!

See what you mean! My French is very rusty and I certainly didn't recognise the words 'Royaume-Uni' as being the UK! So, I think I'll knock that bright idea in the head, then! Razz

We had some really bad problems with autotranslators being used to post stuff on .co.uk and making reviews that read like someone threw all the words in a bag and pulled them out at random.

I had run ins with a few very *Bad word* of French and German people who couldn't understand why their review got E's at home and H's over here. And it doesn't help when members patronise them with over-generous ratings and 'oh your English is SO much better than my Serbo-croat' comments.

Watching Eurovision might help with the translation problem. Economics can help with the other issue.

Secondly as per cross posting using a translator it depends whether the reduced reward you will get from lower ratings (due to translator turning your review of toilet paper into a critique of French culture) is worth the effort and time in cross posting your reviews from the .co.uk site compared with the reward you could get from using that tme to write a well rated review on the uk site.

Naturally if your French is poor you can hardly build up a following for your reviews by reading others which will reduce the number of reads you get.

Sadly you will not be abe to make a fully rational decision until you dip your toe in the channel to coi a phrase, but expect a cold welcome if the translator is poor and the French realise you are another roast beef trying to intrude on their territory.

Blimey I'm a competent economist, even got a letter published in the FT last Saturday.
