Tiscali have not collected a payment since July 2006 and have not once contacted me about it. Got a phone call from a debt collection agency today saying I owe them £1000! What a Face

Oh no - what will you do? Did you realise they had not been collecting?

Not a clue, no letter or phone call or nothing.

Have rang them and it has gone to head office.

I presume there is some supplementary charges for late payment Laughing

You have to laugh really. I look forward to the debate. Moneysavingexpert have proved to be full of patronising, flippant bar stewards BTW.

I have no doubt I will have to pay for the broadband (as I should) but no way do I owe a grand.

Thats what I was thinking.

Does seem strange it has taken them almost 2 years to try and get any money though!

Oh definitely!

It is a case of we both fecked up. TBH mate I have a lot of direct debits and tend to make sure the important ones are coming out and thats it! Will not make that mistake in future. Like I said to the bloke at Tiscali, I do not dispute I owe them for the service but I do not owe them a grand and I will not be paying any significant amount in a lump sum.

What's the most you could owe them? Assuming fifteen quid per month:

£15 x 12 x 2?

£360 tops?

I'd argue the point, though. If you are to blame for them not being paid, then it's a fair cop. If Tiscali are to blame, then fuck them, surely?

Were you paying them by Direct Debit? If so, why did it stop? Did you cancel it? Was it your bank's fault? Was it Tiscali's fault? Why didn't they send you letters after a couple of missed payments?

These are questions I'd want answered before I'd even consider admitting I owed them a penny!

Irrespctive of the outcome, I'd be leaving them and going elsewhere because if they can't send me a letter when there's no money being paid, I don't trust them to be helpful in other ways when you need it!

(And in resposne to the "should you have noticed?" questions, I only look for stuff that shouldn't be there or for new DDs recently set up, so I wouldn't have noticed either.)

This sort of happened to me, only it was the gas. I changed from British Gas to Npower and thought I'd set up a direct debit for it. When I moved house and informed the gas board of the final readings they informed me I owed them £1500 as I hadnt paid in 18 months. I don't check my bank statements that well so I hadn't noticed. I told them it was their fault and that I would only pay it back in instalments on top of the normal direct debit. I think I've just about paid it off now !!
