I dont know if any of you have read in the paper, but there is a woman who has paid to have IVF and she is 63.

She is now britains oldest mum.

What are all your thoughts on this??

I am personally against. I think it is too old and unfair on the baby. Just think, when it is in its early teen's the mother will be on her death bed.

I don't think that any of us can judge this lady better than her GP has who is familiar with her circumstances, whilst we are not.

A lot of people here in rural France live to the ripe old age of 90 and actually consider 60 to be young !

Thats where a lot of mothers make mistakes when choosing to have children, they think of themselves and not the child.

How is that woman going to be able to give the child the same attention that someone in their 20-30's?? Evil or Very Mad

I know that we cannot put age limits on things like IVF but it makes me laugh when some 30 year olds are turned down but yet a 63 year old is excepted.
No
Oh also it makes me wonder why she had to go abroad for the treatment- maybe the english doctors were against the treatment. confused

Was she accepted for free IVF treatment though? I haven't seen much about this, and it doesn't seem to appear in my paper today, but if she went abroad I assume she paid for her own treatment?

30 year olds would only be turned down for IVF (free or otherwise) if there was some medical reason e.g. being overweight, as the treatment is not as successful. However, if they want to pay, then I know for a fact that private doctors would treat them at a higher BMI than the UK NHS will. That's probably reasonable, assuming the success rates do link to BMI, (or whatever other reason people might be screened out for)

It is a difficult dilemma. We have in a sense interfered with nature, with modern medicine, and at the same time, there is the ache many women (and men) have, of wanting a child.

On the one hand, it could be seen as selfish, that this child is likely to lose its parents as it barely reaches adulthood, but on the other hand, there is no reason that these parents cannot give this child a grounded upbringing that comes from being more mature.

There's no black and white answer, just a lot of grey.

I would imagine that a mature woman would actually have a great deal of experience of life to offer her offspring. I really do not think that this lady can be said to be thinking of herself and that's a little mean as a judgement call since none of us know what her state of health is. There is the same chance at any age that your parents will die. Yes, old age does come into play here but who is to say what kind of mother this lady will be ?

Personally, I would like to see many of the irresponsible women who give birth and cannot look after their children properly have sterilisations rather than bringing children into the world that are resented and unloved.

ok i have to agree with that as it does bother me when I see children being mistreated.

I think helen made a good point about their being no black or white to this story, But although I wish her luck I just dont agree with it.

Your post did not make it clear Debbie that the doctor is the possibly unethical one and I agree that cloning is a feared subject in my eyes. However, in this particular instance there are quotes from the parents of the baby and the man says that his wife is actually younger than 63 so the papers probably got it wrong.

Quote :

A controversial Italian fertility doctor has helped a British woman in her early 60s to become pregnant, it was reported.

Patricia Rashbrook, a child psychiatrist from Lewes, East Sussex, is now seven months' pregnant after being given IVF treatment by Severino Antinori, according to The Sun.

The newspaper reported she was 63 - which would make her the oldest British mother when she gives birth. Dr Rashbrook's husband, John Farrant, refused to comment on the story but said his wife was younger
than 63.
Mr Farrant told The Sun: "My wife is seven months' pregnant. We are of course both very happy and looking forward to the birth. Obviously at our age it is quite daunting. I would not call it a miracle baby but an assisted conception. We were aware this was going to come out and we have been preparing ourselves psychologically for the news to break."

In this country the maximum age for IVF is 50 I think hence the reason she went abroad. Italy seems to be the place to go as the oldest ever mother to give birth was also treated in Italy.

An article can be found here.

Quote :
He has said in the past he aimed to be the first to produce a baby cloned from an adult. In 2004 he claimed that he knew of three cloned babies that had been born but refused to produce any evidence, citing legal reasons.

Is that ethical? Someone looking for fame and not even thinking of the consequences of his actions!

Just the thought of having a sprog at that age makes me feel shattered – I had my son when I was 24 and found it totally exhausting – how anyone her age can have the energy to even contemplate it is beyond me! Question
