So, you have discovered a place missing from the trivago database?

Remember that countries are split into regions and these regions then have a list of destinations within them. Destinations are cities, towns and villages. They are NOT attractions or hotels. They are not subregions (counties) either.

CHECK THE DATABASE

Put the name of the region into the data field at the top of the page and choose "Regions" from the drop down list. Click "Search".
If there is more than one option for the Regional name it will appear here. Choose the appropriate one.
This will bring up the Region's index page.
At this point look at the address in your browser's address box (it takes the form "http::/www.trivago.......") In the middle of the line there is the phrase "path=xxxx". xxxx is the Region's identification code. Make a note of it now, you will need it later.
Click "All Destinations". This will bring up an alphabetical list of all the towns and villages in the database for this region. If yours is not present you have a "Missing City".

It is now useful to obtain some supportive evidence for your submission. Type the town name into a web search engine and make a note of the web address relating to the town.

ADDING THE "MISSING CITY"

This is a database management function.
Click "Admin", the second option from the menu in the top right hand corner.
Click "Database Maintenance", the fourth option from the "New Tasks" menu (it's about two thirds of the way down the page).
This brings up the "Database Maintenance" front page.
At the moment there is a dropdown list displaying the default option "All"
Click the list.
Choose the option "Missing City" (ignore all the other options for the moment - we will come back to them in other threads).
In the "ID of Region" box, type the Region code we found earlier.
In the "Comment" box type the name of the missing town. You can add any other comments here if you wish but make sure the town name appears first.
In the source box, type the web address of the website which supports your submission.
Press "Send"

Submissions are checked by a high level member and it can take a long time before your submission appears in the database.

POINTS: 50 points are awarded for a successfully completed database maintenance function. Sumbmissions are either confirmed or rejected. The award is always 100%

A WORKED EXAMPLE.

You want to add the "attraction" Eden Camp which is near to the town of Malton in Yorkshire. You discover that Malton is not in the database.

The Region ID for Yorkshire and Humberside is 41261
Malton is mentioned in the Ryedale and District website (http://www.ryedale.co.uk/ryedale/malton/malton.html)
So we add:
ID of Region = 41261
Comment = "Malton"
Source 1: www.ryedale.co.uk/ryedale/malton/malton.html

The recommendation is to add the attraction to the town nearest to the "Missing City" - in this case York - as a temporary measure. (See ADD ITEM thread) We have the opportunity of making a database correction and moving Eden Camp to its proper place once Malton appears in the list.

But if all of the places you want to write about are not on the database, and you cannot attain a higher level by writing in them, it feels like a catch 22 situation and may be putting users off bothering. I have many to add before I can post and wondered if you can get another member to add them for you ?

Of course. If you are on level 1 or 2, you can always ask someone else (preferrably your mentor) to do that for you. Btw, level 3 can be reached relatively quickly

I am responsible for the geographical structure @trivago, including adding missing destinations. I was very surprised to find this thread here as the whole geographical structure is very complicated and difficult to understand and Alan never asked me to explain the process......and now unfortunately, there are some mistakes that I wish to correct. Here we go:

Not quite correct. Every country is split into regions. Most countries have subregions as well. An island can be a subregion. Or have a look at France: The départements are the regions, but you also have subregions like the French Riviera or Brittany.
Subregions can of course also be requested through the DB-maintenance-tool.

Yup, very good, but it's also good to point out the touristic relevance of the missing city/region: Why should it be added to the database? It makes no sense to have cities/regions added just because they are missing, if no content will be added in that new city/region.

Long time = 1 week maximum. The site is updated once per week and newly added cities/regions only appear on the website after such update. If you are lucky, the update is run the night after your request has been comfirmed and you only have to wait 1 day, but it can also be that you have to wait 7 days Due to these updates, I do not confirm missing cities on a daily basis, but usually once or twice per week.
(It took a little longer in the past due to technical probs and also lack of time, for which I apologize, but all requests from trivago.co.uk-users have been confirmed and will be confirmed on a more regular basis in the future).

No, it's not Rejections are usually not rewarded and confirmations can be rewarded with less than 100% if no source is given (unless it is a newbie requesting something for the 1st time) etc. The award is usually 100%, but definitely not always.

Holy ****, who recommended this? No, please don't do that.
The recommendation is clearly to
1. request the missing city
2. wait for the request to be confirmed
3. wait for the city to appear on the website
4. add the attraction(or any other content) to the newly added city.

If you do it the way that you describe, you generate more work (moving the attraction to the new city later on) and also more shares, which can and should be avoided.

I am glad you cleared up about the missing town thing, as it would make no sense whatsoever to put your attraction into an adjoining town since that is not where the attraction is. Much more sense to ask for a town to be added, then to add the attraction in the right place. Thanks for coming on here and explaining some of the misconceptions. It was very helpful.
