PostSubject: Music Downloads   Mon 17 Jul 2006, 12:45

I was wondering If I could pick your brains about Legal Music download sites.

Which are the best?

I know of iTunes where you pay by the track that is downloaded but there are other sites which offer 'unlimited' downloads for a fixed sum either one off or per month, these on the face of it look better value but what is the catch?

Any help would be appreciated. Very Happy

Limewire is the one I use! - it's free too and I've never had any problems with it. Or are you looking for sites where you do have to pay - but probably get a better service?

Virgin are a pay as you go download site, though a bit pricy, but if you want something particularly special, then it's not that bad.

Mauri: The catch is that the monthly pay sites are DRMd, so you only have use of the music while you continue to subscribe. Thus, you pay X amount to iTunes per month for USE of the music, but if you want to OWN a track, you have to pay the 99p per time, or whateveritcosts.

I tend to er... buy or download legally some CDs and pirate others, thus working out some moral bargain in my head that I'm not being suckered into paying obscene prices, but I'm not a thief either. It's a completely ridiculous attitude of course, but it works for me.

One thing I WON'T do is pay for anything at all that's DRMd.

That's interesting Jill. Do not know about that. If you for example download from a site like the one I put above, what stops me from putting it onto a CD ? Surely it cannot expire in cd form or am I missing something.

I realise that, but you can have to types of monthly membership, for instance one site I think Virgin...is £9.99/month unlimited downloads but you can't transfer the music on to CD and if you stop the membership the music becomes unplayable, but for £14.99/month membership you get unlimited downloads and you can transfer on to CD this does seem like a good deal if you are going to download and burn lots of stuff onto CD...

I suppose the catch might be that you are tied inot being a members for a fixed period a year maybe...not sure.

Ah ok. Sorry. The catch might be that you can only burn so many times? I know there's been fusses about iTunes and the 99c thing cos you can only burn tracks a few times.

I'd say don't trust any site that operates from Russia! Most likely it's pirated stuff anyways.
