| So Murray is once more "British" and not Scottish.
So did the british team get knocked out by portugal and people fly The Union jack at the World cup?
tsk. | |

| Actually, if you look at footage of the 1966 World Cup, they DID fly British flags. | |

| Three lions on their shirts?
I am an England fan kate, we never say we are british when the football is on, it is "England till I die!" Henman was English, it anoys me to see this kind of "ownership" of Scottish, Welsh and if t ever was to happen, N.Irish.
Why not the Scotsman Murray is the pride of Britain rather than the British Murray is the pride of Wimbledon?

| but different competitions have different teams. Whilst rugby, football and cricket play under their national flag, the olympic teams has always been a GB team and tennis (correct me if I'm wrong) are also a GB team. People just change the emphasis when a team win or lose. | |

| I was only pointing out that the flying of the English Cross of St George is new - that in 1966, the fans flew the Union Jack! | |

| I just think the British thing is done to death really, people are only british (in my opinion) if they are not English. | |

Does the name Agincourt mean nothing to you...and that never went to penalties, we had a good team back then, almost as good as the one that played at Jerusalem in 1098. (tongue planted firmly in cheek)

| Poor Northern Ireland don't even have a flag! The fans use that Ulster banner thing, but I don't think they're supposed to. | |

Can't help feeling that view is a little dated. It's not very practical to look at England, Scotland and Wales as different countries anymore. After all, what nationality does it say on your passport? Bet it says 'British citizen' rather than Welsh, Scottish, English or Irish. The seperatist view encourages nationalism - to an extent where there are a lot of Welsh or Scottish people out there supporting the team England is playing against...

| I am not disagreeing with your view at all Sam and i agree we should all be british, but my argument is that if someone is English, the sports commentators call them English and if they are Scottish, they call them british.
Same in F1, same in Cricket, same in most sports including the Olympics.

Well Murray did say he was supporting Portugal against England ! I don't see a problem with it, the England team are representing ENGLAND not Britain or Scotland so why should a Scot support them if they don't want to? Murray is a scottish/British tennis player who is representing no one but himself his nationality is besides the point, if he plays Davis cup then he plays for Britain and all Brits whether scottish English, Welsh or Northern Irish should support him.

| Yeah, I see what you mean. I see what you mean about the commentator thing as well - it's something I hadn't noticed before but now you've mentioned it, the 'English' or 'British' distinction does seem to happen a lot, doesn't it? Especially in sports. | |

| That is it!
That is my argument. If someone wants to e Scottish or British that is their pergoative but I would prefer a more honest approach by commentators towards a persons birth place or chosen nationality.

| Yeah, like you said before Angus, it seems that the title 'British' is mainly used to describe people who 'aren't English'. | |

| I did notice that with the Tennis and Murray and I am positive most of Scotland will not be happy about it. Then again there are a pile of English people sitting on top of a grassy knoll supporting him.
That said, he does play for Great Britain, whereas in the World cup, all brits play for their home country.
We are all (well not literally all) English, Welsh or Scottish AND British though. (and then there's the Cornish, but we won't talk about them)

Same in F1, same in Cricket, same in most sports including the Olympics. YES!!!!! That is the MAIN reason people up here get pissed off. When Henman was the main man, he was English to the commentators. Now that it is Murray, he is deemed British. That is exactly why he is wearing the Scottish sweatband. That kind of incorrect distinction happens all the ruddy time. If that stopped, a lot of the problems surrounding it would stop IMHO.

The British mentality is funny.
At least we wont have to worry about the world cup or wimbledon for a while now.

| Helix - you don't have an official flag, I'm sure you don't! Not an official one, anyway, other than the Union flag. Isn't the big argument about it still trundling on like it has been for years? | |
