| Here in France, we have always had identity cards and have to carry them at all times. What do you, as a UK citizen think of the idea of having to have ID cards ? | |

| I lived in Sweden for a few years when I was little, and everyone there had an ID card too.
I've got no problems from a civil liberties point of view, but I don't really see them solving all the problems that the government seems to think they will, and I also strongly object to (from the way it's currently looking) having to spend hundreds of pounds to get one...

| I agree with the above comment. I have no problem with having a card that I have to carry around- I do that all the time with my driving licence, but I also do not see them being the answer and the cost is just rubbish. | |

| I would be upset if the government spends obscene amount of cash implementing such a scheme, which presumably is to try and track a small percentage of people up to no good.
It's like my recent trip to USA recently - everyone is fingerprinted. Guilty until proven innocent...what the hell do the USA need with my fingerprints..!

| I am not sure that it would involve that much more cost Helen. Here in France, it replaces the passport to a certain degree in that travelling within Europe, the card is sufficient, so many do not ask for passports. | |

| http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4446208.stmPlus we all still need a passport anyway (well if you want to go travelling you do..) which in itself is not a cheap item. (although my current one was actually replaced in Australia and cost me a small fortune to obtain, including a courier and his airfare!) | |

That is mainly an airline policy although I have managed to get on European flights with my driving liscence, and in one case, my works pass.

| yeah but I am an explorer!
I love my passport actually, it is like a mini history. I was gutted when I lost the last one in Australia, as that had a different set of stamps altogether..

| I was glad when I renewed mine to find that the Passport office let me have the old one back because it was filled with stamps that people don't seem to do any more and there was a whole lot of travelling history in there. | |

| Like others I have no problems with the card, just the price. And again, I doubt, in fact i'm 100% sure, it will help to solve the problems that they think it will. people have been making fake credit cards and passports for years, this will just be a nice little new challenge for them. | |
