Wimbledon starts monday.

The same question is asked every year but how do we bring through more decent tennis players ?

Tennis is still too elitist, how can we introduce Tennis to the masses ?

Andy Murray and Tim Henman both come from privileged backgrounds and had private coaching. What about the less privileged ?

Theres a huge untapped pool of talent out there !!

I dont think £60 million is a big number, quite frankly...or why it is relevant to a debate on developing sport in this country?

..it certainly isnt enough for much more than a tennis ball or two per kid!

Considering the state of the game in the UK we do quite well.

Tennis is a minority sport in the UK, the clubs are too elitist and expensive for most people to join and there are aren't enough indoor facilities to properly train promising youngsters through the winter.

I heard that there were more indoor courts in Paris than the whole of the UK. We've got no chance really....

I reckon that once you have paid your quid you have to stop moaning about what gets bought with lottery money.

Want your quid to go somewhere in particular? Then give your WHOLE pound to that cause or project or whatever it may be.

Most people don't give their Pound to the National lottery becauser they want it to go to good causes anyway. They part with it in the hope they'll win the jackpot.

Once you've gambled it its not for you to moan about it

When an organisation applies for funding from the National Lottery they have to match it or at least a good proportion of it with fundrasing of their own.

And even if it is a hobby it should get funding because sports are a way of keeping fit and healthy and a way to get young people off the streets and into something positive. People who participate in such activities as a youngster become more active as adults

When is Timmers going to call it a day ?

Seems a bit sad to see him going out in rounds 1 or 2 every years after all his success.

To be fair he has been the representive of Britain in tennis for as long as I can remember before Andy Murray came on. So he has never been a major success, he has done better than many other people aspire to.
I'm sure they can find him a good job promoting the sport when he wants to retire.

Since he is appaearing next year no time soon. He should bow down now, he sed to actually be seen as really good, top 10, but if he carries on he will be seen as a joke. A shame since i think he is quite good and good to watch (as opposed to loads who just serve after serve) but i don't think that miracle where he wins is going to happen and he is just digging his grave.

The thing is you are a long time retired so if he thinks he can still compete and is enjoying it then he should still go for it, no reason to retire unless injury forces him to, he had a good chance of making the third round this year and as such if I was him I would continue to play, it is not many prople whose job is also their passion and hobby.

thats what I mean.He wil be out of the top 60 for next years slams.
I think hes done great, considering the gene pool of talent there. Do you know any clubs that would take young black kids on from toigh backgrounds that are the future champs? Its a middle lclass sport and why should we bother with it.

It's no wonder we have so few successful Brits in tennis - we put so much pressure on them to do well on grass.

Like Andy Murray; it probably isn't his best surface (he says his best chance of Grandslam title is the US Open). The players have a three month clay court season, and then only three weeks on grass - we need to stop putting such emphasis on such a small part of the tennis season; doesn't seem to be doing our guys any good anyway lol.
