PostSubject: DILEMMA - FILM SECTION CIAO OR DOOYOO.   DILEMMA - FILM SECTION CIAO OR DOOYOO. EmptyFri 07 Jul 2006, 17:11

Imagine the scenario. You buy a film and pay a darned good price for it based upon your experience of previous films with the same actors. Half way through it, you really cannot watch any more because it is so boring. Purists would argue that you cannot review the whole film if you haven't watched it, but I would argue that if you do not tell the public about your disappointment and we all turn our backs on film reviews on films that were so bad we did not watch them all the way through, we are not actually doing Joe Public much service are we ?

How would you tackle it ?

I would say that if you only watched half of a film then you are in no position to review it. What if the film really picked up half way through? I must admit that I only review films I really like or really loath, films that are merely boring I don't think I would find enough to say about.

Could you review a book you had only read half of or a car that you had looked around but never driven? Half knowing a product is the same whatever the product is and dosnt put you in much of a position to be able to pass useful comment.

Surely you could put up with watching it to review. This dilemma could be in a lot of cases and i have the same problem with games i buy that are average. You could say you got bored andstopped watching but people would rate you down for it since you dont know if the story changes etc. I wouldn't review it personally.

I do see that point although sometimes, films are dragged out beyond watchability. Should a reviewer force themselves to watch the whole thing just to give a full report of how they felt about it though ? or just bin the idea of a review. I do the latter but it occurred to me that if we don't force ourselves to watch it then we are not doing the public any favours.

I would probably force myself to watch it in order to inform the public of the whole thing, but I wonder how many people don't write a review on a bad film cos they couldn't get through it.

If I would review a very bad film, I'd definitely watch it all the way through just so that I'd have enough to rant about, since reviews like that are so fun to write. Smile

For crying out loud.

If the film interests you even a tiny bit, watch it. If you feel strongly about it, write about it. If you hate it and cannot finish it, don't watch, don't review it.

What to me makes this easy is this - you bought or went to the film for your own enjoyment. If you didn't like it, that's a shame, but you are under no obligation to write about it.

We're not writing reviews for the newspaper - we're not on deadlines or salaries. Either write or don't - the public don't care one way or the other.

A bit of an over reaction when the posting was merely to see what others thought.

Why?

If I booked a flight on British Airways and they cancelled the flight, could I not write about british Airways being shit?

Look, who is/are anyone to tell someone else if they can/can't write about something, that is what the rating sysytem is for.

Someone told me once about the skimp reviews that we rate down. Sometimes they contain that gem of information that saves people money. Personally, I wouldn't review a film unless I had watched it all, but wondered how many members had watched a movie, or read or book, got so bored they didnt finish it. It was just a query.
