In a recent poll the results showed that out of 16 members that read copied reviews, 8 rate comment and do nothing else, 7 rate, comment and report to ciao, 2 feel smug to be the one that discovers the copy and 3 would tell members via guestbook. What would you do ?

But since i'm not allowed to do that.. Laughing

I always notify the plagarist that Ciao doesn't tolerate copying - through leaving a comment on the review as well as a message in their guestbook. I used to be scared about getting revenge rated but I've hit my limit reading copied reviews on Ciao and don't care about losing community points anymore.

Oh - and yes, i report it to Ciao so they'll remove it quickly.

It's good to see that you report as well, as reporting is the only way that these reviews can be brought quickly to the attention of Ciao and removed and the sooner they are removed, the sooner that member disappears.

I was accused of copying last week (I think). That is - someone (who shall be nameless) wrote the comment "copied!!!!!!!" - then a couple of comments later "Good review". I left a message in their GB asking why this was but got no reply. I knew it wasn't copied - as I believe most of you would - but someone who didn't know me so well could have believed it. Maybe they had two browsers up at the same time and did it by accident. I have written the wrong comments in the wrong review a couple of times now and I cannot imagine anyone thinking you had copied. If it was me, let me know. Might have been having a bad hair day. bounce

People attempting to make a quick buck descend on ciao in their droves, particuarly when there is a school holiday period.

It never gets them anywhere, and they soon lose interest or get kicked off.

It would depend entirely on my mood cos i'm a very moody person.

Sometimes i'll instantly know (or have big gut feeling) that a review is copied and really can't be assed to deal with it on that particular day so i'll click straight out the review and ignore it completely.

Then I have periods where i'll do the exact opposite. I'll smugly google it, smugly write a comment (though I won't accuse them, i'll ask them to confirm if it's their own work) then i'll possibly report the suspected copy to Ciao. Whether I report it to Ciao would depend on whether I like Ciao at that moment in time. The way I feel right now is they don't appreciate or aknowledge my being on the site so I aint gonna help them do their dirty work therefore the copies can stay there until either Ciao get off their lazy backsides and find the copies themselves or someone else reports them. Tough luck to Ciao really. I used to be really good at helping them out by reporting any copiers and abusers I saw on my travels, not much good it did me though.

I'd never waste my energy going round everyones GB to inform them of the copy, that is one thing that'd never change regardless of my mood. I may tell one or two friends if it was interesting enough to have a natter about but that'd be the extent of it.

Yeh I think once reported, that's enough really. Do you ever get that gut feeling that something is copied but cannot find it anywhere ?

Rating off topic and tell people in comments that they shall do this, 3 off-topics mean that someone from the qm will have a look on the review, when someone leaves a link to the original review or URL it's soon deleted ...

Well apart from the usual, rating NH and putting a comment in, I also now, without default go straight to the abuse email and let Ciao know about it. Im fed up of putting time work and energy into my own reviews only to see someone copy someone' elses work. Its like daylight robbery. I also warn readers who have rated, particularly people I recognise by their handles and if they are also part of my COT.

Comment and rate, I did report once but it was a pain to do and therefore I can't be bothered anymore, not very community spirited I know but to be honest if Ciao monitored the reviews with multiple NU ratings it would be able to spot copied reviews without the need for a report from its members.

Yeh I think ciao should be able to weed out copies just by looking at the charts but they don't seem to bother looking.

Sometimes I wonder, but I haven't a clue where to begin looking ~ I hate google ~ I have asked other members for their impressions ~ and I will hold my rating, and ask the person whose review it is to clarify something.

The responses often are interesting, although not always telling me what I want to know.

If a review has been already spotted as a copy, I might leave a comment pointing to the "Edit review" link for the member to remove plagiarised portions himself and suggest they re-write in their own words.

As I am very busy following alerts (to nearly 2000 members and quite a few topics) I do not often look at new reviews, and then only pick topics that interest me, so I do not often spot copied video game reviews (lol).

Not sure even I could cope with that many alerts. Since stepping outside my alerts, I really enjoy ciaoing more and see more of the new stuff that is coming on the site. I read my alerts at weekends now, for a rest.

not sure what is worse though, a copied review or a made up one?

At least a copied review is usualy of a high standard.

Are we allowed to give examples of made up reviews on here?

One now deleted review of a deleted member was on an imported car which he claimed he had converted to a right hand drive model.

The amount he claimed he paid for this car was £22,000 more than it would have cost to have this process done through the only importer of said vehicle.

happy now?
