| A new idea being floated around is that schools are to discourage children from raising their hands in class because the quiet kids don't have a voice.
I remember this old chestnut being floated around a few years ago. Nonsense then and nonsense now.

| But - contrary to the heading you gave your discussion - it has not been, and is very unlikely to be, banned | |

| I'd like to think so but you never know these days. The do gooders seem to get their own way too much for my liking.
I read yesterday that an unused school was ordered to keep the electricity flowing to prevent intruders hurting themselves when they get in. Have you ever heard anything so stupid.

| It was on GMTV this morning, but there doesnt seem to be a link to the story as of yet. When I was doing my child care training in schools we were told to ask individual children the answers to questions and not ask the whole class as then the teacher could monitor who was listening and understood. | |

| I was a quiet kid...(In fact I am a fairly quiet adult...TRUE!) Didn't hurt my education! (but then that might have been natural brilliance...)
Not heard this story..or indeed the one about the leccy...it's not in GMTV website or even in their chat either (Not that i go there EVER but I wanted to read some background info..!)
I think the problem with H&S in general (and I say this with a fair amount of knowledge on the topic) is that many people cannot understand risk assessment and have the courage of their decision making.
It is the same issue we often see with hiring and firing...people have all kinds of misconceptions about what they can and cannot do...and they get in the way of basic decision making...when people who CLEARLY should no longer remain employed are employed because of some misguided thought process.
It's nothing to do with Health and Safety, it is nothing to do with anything but having robust and fair policies, a capable management team, and a sensible thought process and acting on it.
As an aside: I've had a killer of a safety issue at work yesterday and today...and it staggers me how (BaD) decisions are made, and simple solutions to reduce risk are overlooked for the strangest (and often inaccurate, like this case...) reasons. Thankfully significant injury was avoided..!!

| I wish the year 7 student who was providing himself with a little self loving had kept his hands raised and away from his genitals in my PSHE class last year. Worrying thing was the lesson was on personal organsation and not sex education, still not sure what the turn on was for a discussion on sorting your school bag out the night before rather than in the morning. | |
