| Does anyone find the women grunting annoying ?
The Williams sisters and Sharapova are the worst examples. I think they should be made to stop, it must be incredible irritating for the opponent and is tantamount to cheating.

Wrong again Phil... The Italian Open is a premier tournament on the mens tour and a lower tier tournament on the womes tour, which is why the prize money is different. If you look at other tournaments I think the Moskow Open is an example the mens prize money is LESS than the womens for the opposite reason...

| Mauri, you seem to love to disagree with the majority. Clearly the womens tennis tour, without piggybacking off the mens tour, would be pretty small time, as is the case for golf, football...well, all sports if we are honest. Only womens athletics holds court with the men for TV and crowds.
75% of people dont want towatch wmens sport, its sole purpose to sell cosmetics and sportswear. The Italians have the balls to put them on the same bill and not let them have the same money, hence the womens tournament not having a higher rating.

Well it could be that mens sports has had a head start to build up the infrastructure, the interest and the culture to support it. It wasn't all that long ago that the majority of people men and women didn't think womens sport was a 'feminine' thing to do, hardly an incentive for young girls to take it up. Women's football is the fastest growing sport on the world and it is attracting bigger crowds and sponsorship every year... who's to say that in 20 or 50 years time it will not be as keenly foloowed or funded as men's football. There are difference in the sports and the way women and men play, men of course have more natural strenght and so are likely to perform better in activities that require strenght as a prerequisite BUT this does not mean that women's sport cannot be exciting to watch... its just different... We should get over this hang up about whether men can beat women etc and realise that prize money is about what people are prepared to pay, if the Grand slams in Tennis have decided that they will pay equal prize money then fine I don't have any problem with it, the women deserve it just as much as the men... its all ridicoulous sums money anyway.

Well its' a chcken and egg situation...how much coverage, sponsorship and hype is there about women's golf compared to men's golf? Is it any wonder that people don't watch and while there is little interest the game will not grow. The standard of the play at the highest level is also worse than the men BUT there are far fewer women playing the game at any competitive level so it's not surprising...

| Both men and women should probably play best of three sets in the first week of a Grandslam - the lack of competition means people probably don't want to watch tonnes of five setters early on anyway. I enjoy both the mens and the womens matches equally but the gap between the top 20 and the rest in the womens is fairly vast - the majority of the seeds win in 45 minutes or less in the early rounds of a Slam. As for the grunting, I wish someone would gag Sharapova - as I understand it, you are meant to forfeit a point if you 'call out' while a point is in play. I've never heard anyone 'call out' as loud as she screeches. | |

Yes...but this year at Wimbledon the mens top two seeds got to the final (fairly predictable) while in the women the 18th and 25th(?) seeds were in the final...

Fair point, though Bartoli and Williams are still top 20 players (Venus' seeding was a bit misguiding as she doesn't enter many ranking tournaments), whilst in the mens more of the non-seeded players are likely to progress (like Mahut and Songa at Queens).

| Thats the point. ANy hype and sponsorship of the women tennis players is only because they play on the guys tournaments. Could the mens tour stand alone? Yes. Could the womens tour stand alone? No. I,as a bloke, am not being sexists here,im beinga realists.
Again, would you prefer two tickets to the mens final or the womens final? Or the perfect harmony of a mixed doubles final... You all picked the mens final, which is why they should get more money.

Anyway, I expect ziggy prefers women who grunt! I cant remember Connors playing Dont care if its unlaydeelike but its cheating isnt it. It is trying to put the other player off. Basically the Williams's and Sharapova are cheats.
