| I have ended up in contact with a couple of head cases via the net although fortunately I managed to filter them out before an actual meet although I did get a few nasty calls from one of them, I did eet one nice person through the net and just followedall the usual rules about meeting in a public place and having a get out excuse in case they were really dull.
Friend of mine had a scare recently when his 15 year old daughter disappeared after meeting some guy on the net who turned out to be in his late 20's, the speed of response from the police was pretty impressive and she was back safe and sound within two hours. The scary thing was she had given out all of her personal details including home address.

| Bloody hell! Young people do give out their info way too easy.
Although I have given my number out to my now boyfriend, I was so careful and as an adult, I know what is safe.

| I've met a few folks, a couple of which are on here. Never had a problem and was nice to be able to see the 'real' person. | |

| But can you ? Are people who they say they are. They may be perfectly honest with a description of themselves as THEY SEE THEMSELVES< but it doesn't mean that is how others see them. | |

| If they are honest about how they see themselves, how exactly does that make it a valid criticism to say how others see another person is somehow more right than the other way around? Evangelion again is a perfect catalyst for that speculation in that one person is not made up of just one self, but of many selves, the one that I see, the one you see, the one the person under scrutiny sees, etc., just under different light. | |

| Okay I shall explain. I saw a friend called Mike put a profile on a dating site. I read it. It did not resemble him at all. He met a girl from the states and she was disappointed, not because he was dishonest, but because he had described himself in a light that other people do not see. Words on a screen can't be taken to be enough. When I met my husband, I had seen a photo, but photos don't move, don't gesture. When I saw him as a real person it was very different to the image that I had conjured up. I think that telephone breaks barriers, and that voices paint better pictures of who you are than words in a description. | |

| Another good example of this is how people imagine characters in books - without a picture or voice, different people get different impressions; and are inevitably dissapointed by the 'real' thing - simply because it's not how they imagined it. | |

| When I met my boyfriend, Wormy, on the net, I sent a picture of myself and he sent me one of him. We talked for ages on the phone before we met so I was more then sure that I knew what he would be like, and he thought the same. However, you are right that there are some small things that you can never learn over the net, such as the way they move, small little things etc! But if people lie about who they are then in my eyes they can only be out for one thing. | |
