There's a little bit on the front page, but to be honest, it does need to be more noticeable.

There's also a little banner on the top of the forum, but the same applies there, too.

No it doesn't, it is visible on the start page, but not on the profile page though

OK, so it disappears immediately after you sign in but if you return to the front page, it returns.

Am I right in thinking that the competition is more about the amount you post rather than the quality?

If Member A posts one outstanding article and Member B posts 7 good articles, that Member B is going to be more 'successful' in the competition?

Nope. It is all about who has the most highly placed articles within the topics given within the period of a week.

Yes but they do have to be of good quality. Aim for top 1 or 2. No use having 15 but they're all #5's!
