I'm sure I'm not the only one.

The English, Welsh, Scottish, Northern Irish share common values. Why should they think themselves as so very different from each other?

We have had a common history for centuries, share a language, a currency and still share a government and electoral system to some extent.

Personally I love the Irish, Scots and Welsh but I always think of myself as English first and I bet they think likewise and I respect that.

That's cool but I think that a day to celebrate "Britishness" would be more appropriate

I'm not against a 'Britain day' in principle - could do a lot of good. But if I had the choice I'd opt for St George.

Nor was St Patrick Irish - he merely drove the snakes from Ireland... at least I think that's the case..

Agreed, Welsh first - my nationality, the country I was born and raised in.
British second.

I think of myself English first because I was born and raised here, even though I am 1/2 Scott.

Um, to be honest, I pick and choose.

I was born in England, then brought up in Scotland to Scottish parents.

But wouldn't you agree Helen, that hearing your accent, people would call you English? People assume I'm Scottish when they hear me.

They generally wouldn't call you British.

yep accent wise..definitely English - but then that is "Brits"...many Americans might not be able to pin point an English or a Scottish accent all that well...

although..until a year ago..the majority of English people would have thought me Scottish!! (and the Scots thought I was Australian!)

The Australians however were never in any doubt over my Pommy accent.

In the proposed constitutional reforms announced early this week, all government buildings will fly the Union flag. Thats a step in the right direction. Id prefer the St George flag but still, this is good too.
