Eleven Years Old and Pregnant

Have noticed on another website that I use that there is some debating about an eleven years old girl who is pregnant by a fifteen year old boy.

What do you think should be done? Should she be made to keep the baby or not? Should either child be punished for breaking the law, or would you class this a statutory rape and only punish the boy? Who is to blame - the parents, the children themselves or someone else? How are we going to reduce the rising numbers of girls under the age of sixteen getting pregnant?

I'll put a link up to the story when I find one.

It's a very difficult one, and here, not knowing the circumstances, would hate to be in judgement of anyone. I think that professionals concerned with the particular case must make the judgement call.

A schoolgirl who became pregnant at the age of 11 is set to break the record for being the UK's youngest mother.

Now aged 12, she has told a national newspaper how she is "really excited" about the prospect of having a child after losing her virginity to a boy aged 15 in Edinburgh.

She is due to give birth in a few weeks, breaking the record set by Jenny Teague of Dorset, who had a baby aged 12 years and nine months in 1997.

The girl, who has not been named, told The Sun: "I think I'll be able to cope as I've had lots of practice looking after my brothers."

She feared that she might be pregnant after having unprotected sex with the boy on a night out with friends in Edinburgh last August.

The pregnancy was confirmed with the help of a supermarket home-testing kit.

Her 34-year-old mother told the newspaper: "I'm not ashamed of my daughter at all - in fact, I'm proud of her for keeping her baby."

The mum-to-be, who smokes up to 20 cigarettes a day according to the newspaper, said she hoped the baby would be a boy.

"I'm enjoying being pregnant - even though I get a bit of a sore back and sore ribs," she said.

I think if those are the circumstances then her mother is unfit to be a mother although here, I cannot be as specific as that since I do not know the circumstances.

Changing the subject a little here, there seems to be some connection between town living and country living as to the age that a young person first has sex. For example there are many years between the age my husband first had sex (14) and when I did. In the country, the situation never arose at that kind of age.

She is actually from West Lothian (according to the news on the radio) so she could actually be from a rural town or village.

Sorry it was meant to demonstrate that as a youngster I had no idea about sex at all.

Down in sunny rural Fordingbridge I never got a sniff until I was nearly 17.

Sheesh, this thread needs a link to the previous one about what has changed about kids upbringings...a whole lot apparently.

THere are so many social factors at work here, the whole thing is a sorry sorry affair. THose that have neglected this child so she ends up drinking, smoking and having sex at her age ought to be called to account.

I don;t care that the mother isnt ashamed of her daughter, but she should be damn well ashamed of herself.

She isn't from Glasgow

Nor was her Mother 15. she was actually about 23.

As Helen said, she aint from here.

It is so hard to imagine what their lives must be like. I have an 11 year old son and I would be mortified to think he was having sex at this age. He still loves his lego for gods sake!

Good. That is how it should be. Just don't let him outside until he is at least 23!


My niece is 14 and I saw the first photos of her in makeup at my mother's last night, but without it, she is still a wee girl (she is small anyway, so looks younger), and there is no way she should be thinking about having sex yet. *Shudders*

why cant children just be children. At her age I was still playing with barbie!!

It makes me really sick this story, to think that a mother has praised her child for having se-x this young.

What sort of upbringing will this child have. it really is sick.

Gawd this really is going to make me look old and perhaps explains something about change. We had no TV as kids til very late in teens, and then a shared telly with the neighbours.
