| I have always emailed ciao to delete reviews I consider obsolete or unhelpful to the site (my own), and discovered thanks to another member that there is a faster way of doing it. If you go to the abuse page and report your own review, stating in reasons that its crap and you want it off the site, it goes quicker !! Hehe. I have loads to do yet. | |

| The only problem with deleting rather than updating old reviews is that if you ever right in that topic again (say if the topic becomes useful again) then you are at risk of being done for abuse. I would advise people to make a note of what they have written in to avoid this.

| I'd advise people not to write crap reviews in the first place. |

| It's easy to say not to write crap reviews in the first place! But when I was new to Ciao most of my reviews were crap because I lacked the knowledge on how to write and what information to put in them. I have learnt over time what info is needed in a review and is (hopefully!) at an acceptible standard now! | |

| Like so many members, my first few reviews were really bad - mainly as I didn't really know what to write to make a good review.
I went back and updated some of them, but one of the original ones I left in it's original state. I now use this as an example when other new members join, and write a poor review. Whilst leaving a constructive critism or a message in their guestbook, I tell them not to worry and say we all started off in a similar way, then refer them to my original review. This (hopefully) shows that I'm not just being nasty or overly critical, but actually want to help them. This proves quite successful.

| I don't know, like most people I learned to write at school and, er, didn't manage to forget between leaving school and joining ciao.
It really isn't rocket science. |

It really isn't rocket science. Er except that they don't seem to teach the same writing skills at school now. Children don't seem to be taught the spelling rules, ie my 14 year had never been taught the i before e rule (except by me), and they simply aren't expected to get to grips with with even basic grammar.

| Oh and back on topic, I've left one of my first reviews on-site, unedited...why, not so I can show how much I've improved, but so that the revenge raters can give me the low rates without needing to write a comment.
(and I can't be ar$ed to update it)

I find that when teaching English people and it never ceases to surprise me that children are not taught grammar. Getting back on topic as well, just because you are articulate in your written English does not mean you are a natural born review writer, a skill that is a learned one.

| I like all my old crap reviews to be kept just the way they are cos they act as a good reminder as to how brilliant my writing has now become (well if I can't compliment myself once in a while, who can? ) | |

Shame the PF does not think so ha ha I know that was an evil comment but I have a hangover and a gym class in two hours and I need others to suffer as well. I'm can't be bothered to edit my bad review and would rather leave i there for posterity.

| Go get yourself an avatar will you. You look positively undressed. Avatar comp this month technology !!
Right back on topic
Deleting reviews that are crap.
Outdated reviews cross my mind here as well as some are written on products that are not sold any more. What use are they to the site apart from historic interest ?

| hmm, I don't look good undressed! OK. Avatar hunt!
saying that about products no longer Sold! How many times have certain items been re-released? Like the Minidisk when it first came out, 8months later it vanished! now it's back and bigger than before! you can almost tell that the second you delete the review , it'll be back on the shelves! |

| Bit if it is a new release, then it is also a new product and merits a new write up, because if the new product is based on old reviews of its past performance, it hardly seems right. | |

| true but until the new product is listed then most people will go on the closest model to it regardless if it's not been made for years!
I'm about to write a review in Ciao on a book that hasn't been published for 3yrs! |

But that would be unfair bias. People who produce products do make mistakes, but they also learn from them if they are astute makers aware of what the public want and how they went wrong last time. - Quote :
