| Can I clear something up.....
I have no problem with negative ratings, when used in the correct way.
Yes, they can help a writer, they can learn from it and improve.
But if someone simply wants to give out negative ratings only, for no real reason, I object.
Ciao have deleted members who have done such, so I guess they think so also!

I don't feel Rachel intended for our views to be scrutinised as to whether they are right or wrong. Oh for crying out loud. It's a discussion. I stated my opinion. It happens to disagree with yours. I think it's an important thread, actually, because Ciao are clearly not investigating abuse reports, and simply acting on them. They are deleting people for writing negative reviews, for 'advertising', for commenting, but not for copying or running multiple accounts, seemingly. Rachel does not tell me/us what to discuss or how to discuss it (beyond rules of the board such as 'naming and shaming'), nor does she you. I disagree with the idea that 'negativity' if you will, is abuse. You may not like it, and you may not behave that way, but that's your right. It doesn't make it abuse. I am not attacking you personally, but I will dispute and discuss if I, after careful reflection, think the point made is worthy of discussion. I disagree with your point on this occasion. I will do my best to convince you that there is another view. I do think you feel that this is a personal attack, as I have disputed the point you made. That doesn't mean that you shouldn't have a view!

They've deleted members who have written extremely negative, though substantiated, reviews of firms and companies. They've blocked members who have advertised THIS SITE in private guest books. That's my point. Ciao delete and block members for the trivial, not for the important.

Either that or I touched a raw nerve unintentionally. I have to admit I think I now understand the real reason behind the post.

| I can honestly say this was a stimualting debate until now.
what raw nerve?
the only perosn upset by this seems to be you.
You have failed to make clear what your argument really is and then try and defend yourself against people who are not attacking you.
Relax, its only a commerical website!

Not a raw nerve - simply a difference of opinion. You seem to think that if someone disagrees, they are being confrontational, or something. Nobody is saying you haven't the right to an opinion. But back it up, engage - from my point of view, this isn't an argument, it's a discussion. Why are you afraid to be disagreed with?

| I can actually see both points of view here. I have seen people be what I call pinickity on reviews, picking out one small item that really does not merit rating down a review (in my view), and many of these just to make a point, and then the same people rating another review of a similar product inconsistently and with better ratings although the detail was less. Yes, there are pinickity people who are selectively pinickity. That is true in life as well. I used to care about ratings, but I don't care much any more, as long as I know I did the best I could do and tend to go with the theory that each review is helpful or unhelpful to individuals and that really they can be the only judge of which applies to them. I argued once because I thought my review was an adequate one and gave my opinion on a product with all the relevant details, but was marked down by a member that didn't agree with my opinion. That's where grey areas exist because each of us is entitled to our opinion, which is why opinion sites thrive. | |

Absolutely! You see the glass half full, I see some bastard who took a swig out on my glass when I was in the toilet. No one is right or wrong but I am more right than you.

| Back on topic, I consider reporting accounts created for the sake of causing havoc to ciao. Many new members get confused and get into the crossfire and the people that do this don't think of how much it affects the running of the site for members that are there to write reviews. I think it is a great shame and one of the elements of ciao that makes it a less tempting place to be. | |

| Very true. And these ones should be reported since they only have one intention in mind.
Sadly though, there will always be the ones who feel it is their right to instruct all others how to write the perfect review. Trouble is they don't seem to write well themselves.

| Negative responses to a review should never be reported as 'abuse', unless they're obviously intended to be. Someone who gives an 'off topic' rating and a reasonable comment saying why (that you may or may not agree with) is well in their right to do so, surely? Reporting them for abuse because of it just seems like an obscure revenge. | |

| I think you should report people for abuse on Ciao simply because they are on Ciao. | |

| Let's get back on topic here. What behaviour in your opinion merits report to ciao abuse ? | |

| The problem is what some see as abuse others don't. This might be just due to a difference in opinions or because the person is the one who is giving the abuse.
As I have said before, some behaviour I have seen on Ciao, I think is totally out of order. However others think it is perfectly OK to behave in such a way.
I think my policy would be if my rate or comment is likely to upset or cause offence then it should be classed as abuse.
There are nicer ways to tell someone there review is really bad and contains no useful info than ways I have seen.
Also, We all look for different things in a review and should therefore accept a review is not necessarily bad because it does not meet our personal criteria for a review. Just because someone out nutritional info or didn't include the price does not make the review bad, the review surely should be rated on personal info and exactly how good the product is. Price and other details are just additional.
