Good actors in bad roles...

Why do good actors make some awful decisions when it comes to picking roles? Surely they read the script beforehand...? Especially in recent years where the script has become one of the most significant factors in an audience's response to a film.
For example - Charlize Theron - won oscars for her role in 'Monster' and then chose to do 'Aeon Flux' - bad acting, bad script, bad directing, bad everything!
Anyway, sorry about that slight rant. Anyone else seen good actors in bad roles?

Will Smith-turned down the role for Neo in the matrix to make Wild Wild West.

Not particuarly bad but average compared to the Matrix

That was absolute crap and only got made because L.Ron Hubbard wrote the book (the leader of the scientollogy bollocks) and Travolta is a grand master of the purple dimension or something meaningful.

That man severely messed up the ACTUAL historical background of that. More than most folks know.

I actually grew up in the town where Wallace came from so had the history of it drummed into me as a kid.

*He was not a nice man. In fact he was a drunken bastard who fought anyone who would give him so much as a look.

*He never met Robert the Bruce.

*The Princess bird from france was FOUR years old when this all happened.

* He was not five foot nothing like Gibson.

*He did not have a really bad Edinburgh accent. (well, I am guessing that one but I know I don't and I come from the same place)

*He was ginger.

*he did not fight his battles in Ireland where this film was shot.

Really, really bad film. (though I think I may have strayed off topic.....)
